Abstract: Green hydrogen is emerging as a pivotal element in Africa's energy transition, offering substantial potential for reducing carbon emissions and meeting the continent's future energy needs. By 2050, green hydrogen and its derivatives are expected to play a critical role in achieving significant reductions in total final energy consumption and carbon emissions, aligning with the 1.5°C climate scenario. This article explores the multifaceted role of green hydrogen, examining key outcomes from COP28, investment requirements, and the continent's evolving electricity mix. It also delves into green hydrogen’s export opportunities, highlighting Africa's potential to become a major player in the global hydrogen market, while addressing the crucial water resource constraints that must be managed to ensure sustainable production.
